As part of the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, Germany's Goethe Institute invited 25 international artists to three Brazilian Amazonian cities to create works which would inspire awareness of the threat to the enviornment. Filmaker John Arden used two crews to shoot his documentary "Artists to the Amazon". Among the artists was British sculptor Antony Gormley who found an old brick factory and used children from the town of Porto Velho to help him create thousands of clay figurines which he used to compose the work "Amazonian Field".
